CFTC Clarifies Tokenized Assets and Blockchain Records for Futures Firms
Updated FAQs address customer funds invested in legally permitted tokenized assets and allow blockchain technology to satisfy recordkeeping requirements.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission updated its crypto and blockchain FAQs to clarify how regulated futures-market firms may use tokenized permitted investments and blockchain-based records.
The update addresses investments of customer funds in tokenized forms of assets that futures firms are legally permitted to hold. It also explains how registrants can use blockchain technology to meet recordkeeping requirements under the Commodity Exchange Act.
The change gives futures-market participants a clearer compliance framework for maintaining transaction and account records on distributed ledgers. Records held through blockchain systems must still satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, including access for examination.
The updated FAQs address tokenized investments and blockchain-based recordkeeping directly.
