Visa Inc. has teamed up with Ripple-backed SBI Holdings and its crypto arm, SBI VC Trade, to introduce a new crypto rewards credit card in Japan. The innovative product, launched in partnership with APLUS Co. Ltd. on May 1, allows users to earn digital assets like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and XRP through everyday spending, marking a significant step in the integration of traditional finance and cryptocurrency.
This new Visa-SBI credit card is designed to give users seamless exposure to cryptocurrencies without requiring direct purchases. Instead, reward points earned from transactions are automatically converted into the user’s selected crypto asset at no additional cost. To receive these crypto rewards, cardholders must maintain an account with SBI VC Trade.
The card comes in two versions tailored to different users. The standard card is ideal for beginners and offers up to 2.5% in crypto rewards, while the premium “Gold” version targets higher spenders with returns of up to 10%. Additionally, Gold cardholders who spend over 2 million yen annually can earn bonus crypto rewards equivalent to that spending threshold. The annual fee for the premium card is set at 6,600 yen.
Applicants must choose a preferred cryptocurrency—Bitcoin, Ethereum, or XRP—upon signing up. Beyond retail purchases, the card also integrates with SBI’s brokerage services, allowing users to earn crypto rewards through recurring investments in mutual funds via credit card payments. This feature represents a unique approach in Japan, combining traditional investment strategies with digital asset accumulation.
Visa continues to expand its footprint in the crypto ecosystem, recently collaborating with Coinbase-backed Base, Polygon, and other blockchain networks to support stablecoin settlements. Meanwhile, SBI Holdings is strengthening its crypto presence and exploring the acquisition of BitBank, further reinforcing its commitment to digital finance innovation.
