Coinbase executive Jesse Pollak has announced a major strategic shift for Base after acknowledging that his vision of an onchain social economy failed to accelerate cryptocurrency adoption as expected.
In a post on X, Pollak admitted that he spent the past two years betting that onchain-native social platforms, including Farcaster, Zora, mini apps and creator coins, would drive the next wave of crypto growth. Instead, he said the sector failed to gain lasting momentum, while other blockchain applications experienced stronger adoption.
"I was definitively wrong," Pollak wrote, explaining that although developers successfully expanded the ecosystem through stablecoins, prediction markets and perpetual futures, social applications ultimately "disintegrated completely." He added that Base's emphasis on social innovation caused it to lag behind competitors in key areas such as crypto trading, tokenization and digital payments.
As part of the strategic overhaul, leadership of the Base app will return to Coinbase. Crypto investor Jordan Fish, better known as "Cobie" on X, will lead the app's future development. Pollak said Cobie will focus on building "the best damn app for onchain," while expanding its reach beyond the Base ecosystem.
Fish is also the founder of Echo, a community fundraising platform that Coinbase acquired for $375 million last year. His appointment signals Coinbase's renewed focus on expanding practical blockchain applications for a broader audience.
Meanwhile, Pollak will concentrate on strengthening the Base blockchain itself, positioning it as infrastructure for global finance. His priorities will center on improving support for trading, payments and AI agents rather than consumer-focused social experiences.
The leadership transition reflects a broader shift across the cryptocurrency industry. While blockchain-based social platforms have struggled to achieve mainstream adoption, developers and investors are increasingly directing resources toward stablecoins, tokenization, decentralized finance, AI-powered applications and payment solutions. Coinbase's latest restructuring highlights its effort to align Base with the fastest-growing sectors of the digital asset ecosystem and strengthen its long-term role in the future of onchain finance.
