Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has thrown his support behind NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s call for open-weight artificial intelligence models, arguing that they could outperform closed frontier AI systems in specialized enterprise applications.
Huang made his first-ever post on X by sharing an open letter titled "Open Weights and American AI Leadership,"signed by NVIDIA alongside major technology companies including Meta, Microsoft, and IBM. The letter promotes open-weight AI models as a key driver of innovation, competition, and continued U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
Responding to Huang’s post, Armstrong said Coinbase strongly supports the development of American open-weight AI models and revealed that the cryptocurrency exchange is increasingly adopting them across its operations.
According to Armstrong, open-weight AI models can become more effective than general-purpose frontier models when trained on proprietary enterprise data. He pointed to Coinbase’s compliance operations as an example, explaining that a model fine-tuned on roughly 100,000 internal compliance cases could outperform broader AI systems in handling regulatory and compliance-related tasks.
Armstrong’s comments highlight a growing belief that customized AI models may offer businesses greater accuracy and efficiency for industry-specific applications, particularly in highly regulated sectors such as cryptocurrency and financial services.
In the open letter, Huang compared today’s open-weight AI movement to the rise of open-source software in the 1980s, arguing that broader access to AI technology can accelerate innovation while strengthening America’s competitive position in the global AI race.
The letter also acknowledged that open-weight AI carries potential risks, including misuse. However, its signatories argued that transparency enables researchers, developers, and security experts to identify vulnerabilities and build stronger safeguards that improve AI safety over time.
Several influential figures across the technology and crypto industries also endorsed Huang’s message. Tesla CEO Elon Musk called the initiative worthy of his "full support," saying Huang was right about the importance of open AI development. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the United States should continue leading both open-source and proprietary AI innovation, while Block co-founder Jack Dorsey described the initiative as "excellent."
The growing support from industry leaders underscores increasing momentum behind open-weight AI as businesses seek more customizable and efficient artificial intelligence solutions.
