Binance US is preparing to expand beyond cryptocurrency trading by pursuing regulatory approval to enter the fast-growing prediction markets sector. The exchange plans to apply for a Designated Contract Market (DCM) license with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), marking a significant step in its strategy to diversify services and strengthen its presence in the U.S. market.

According to journalist Eleanor Terrett, Binance US CEO Steve Gregory confirmed the company intends to submit its CFTC application next month. Gregory shared the update during the Rare Evo blockchain conference, noting that prediction markets are a key part of the exchange’s long-term growth strategy.

If approved, the DCM license would allow Binance US to offer regulated event-based contracts, enabling users to trade on the outcomes of future events rather than traditional financial assets. These markets have gained popularity as traders increasingly use them to speculate on elections, economic data, sporting events, and other real-world developments while also managing portfolio risk.

Beyond prediction markets, Binance US plans to broaden its product lineup with lower trading fees, perpetual futures, and other financial offerings. The move reflects a wider industry trend as crypto exchanges seek to evolve into comprehensive trading platforms.

The expansion also comes as competition intensifies. Coinbase recently introduced its "Everything Exchange" vision, signaling plans to offer a broader range of financial products beyond digital assets. Binance US appears to be taking a similar approach to capture growing demand for regulated investment products.

However, regulatory approval remains uncertain. Binance US has yet to formally submit its application, and the CFTC review process could take several months. There is also no guarantee the license will be granted.

The company’s ambitions arrive amid ongoing legal uncertainty surrounding prediction markets. A recent federal court rejected the CFTC’s request to stop Wisconsin from enforcing state laws against sports event contracts and denied intervention requests from Kalshi and Crypto.com. The decision underscores the regulatory challenges facing event-based trading platforms, meaning Binance US must overcome significant legal and compliance hurdles before launching its prediction market services.
