BlackRock is making it easier for investors to move Bitcoin into its spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, potentially opening a new path for larger holders seeking exposure to the asset without immediately selling their coins.

Robbie Mitchnick, BlackRock’s head of digital assets, revealed the change during Bloomberg’s ETF IQ program on August 10. He said the firm has reduced the minimum amount of Bitcoin required for in-kind contributions and intends to lower the threshold further.

The process works through authorized participants, which are major financial firms responsible for creating and redeeming ETF shares. Eligible holders can contribute Bitcoin and receive IBIT shares rather than selling their BTC for cash. The process can also work in reverse.

The move follows a regulatory shift that could reshape the US Bitcoin ETF market. Spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January 2024 using cash-based creations and redemptions. In July 2025, the SEC allowed in-kind transactions for crypto exchange-traded products, giving funds greater flexibility in handling Bitcoin.

The timing comes as demand for Bitcoin ETFs remains significant. US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted more than $850 million in net inflows last week, marking their strongest weekly performance since April, according to SoSoValue. Collectively, the funds hold roughly $78 billion worth of Bitcoin.

However, flows remain volatile. US Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $145 million in outflows on August 10, while concerns over cryptocurrency security have also highlighted the risks of self-custody.

Another major attraction is potential tax efficiency. Because IBIT is structured as a grantor trust, investors may potentially contribute Bitcoin without immediately recognizing a taxable sale, while preserving their original cost basis and holding period. Crypto tax specialist Clinton Donnelly noted that the interpretation has not been formally confirmed by the IRS.

With Bitcoin trading near $63,600, BlackRock’s lower entry threshold could encourage more Bitcoin holders to shift assets from personal custody into IBIT. If the company continues reducing the minimum, future Bitcoin ETF flows could reveal how much previously self-custodied BTC is entering regulated investment products.
