Ripple is expanding its footprint in Africa’s institutional digital asset market through a new partnership with Absa Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB), bringing its crypto custody technology to financial institutions across the continent.
Reece Merrick, a senior Ripple executive, announced the partnership on Monday, saying the collaboration will support the launch of Absa Digital Asset Custody. The service will use Ripple Custody technology to provide institutions with infrastructure for securely storing and managing digital assets.
The partnership represents another step in Ripple’s global expansion strategy as demand grows for institutional-grade cryptocurrency custody solutions. Through Ripple’s infrastructure, Absa aims to provide a secure and regulated environment where institutional clients can safeguard digital assets and manage private keys.
Merrick said the initiative is designed to bring stronger security, governance and operational control to digital asset management. These features have become increasingly important as banks and other financial institutions explore blockchain-based assets while navigating cybersecurity and regulatory requirements.
Absa Digital Asset Custody is being developed as a digital-first service intended to meet standards comparable to those applied to traditional financial assets. The platform seeks to address several challenges associated with cryptocurrency custody, including security risks, governance requirements and regulatory complexity.
By integrating Ripple Custody, Absa will allow institutional customers to maintain greater control over their digital asset holdings. Clients will also have more direct oversight of transactions and approval processes while gaining access to Absa’s established banking infrastructure and compliance capabilities.
The deal strengthens Ripple’s presence in Africa and highlights the growing role of traditional financial institutions in the digital asset sector. Rather than relying solely on crypto-native custody providers, institutional investors are increasingly seeking solutions that combine blockchain technology with established banking controls.
For Ripple, the Absa partnership also expands the reach of its custody business beyond payments and demonstrates how its blockchain infrastructure can support institutional digital asset management in emerging markets.
