Akamai shares rose more than 14% at Friday’s open after the company announced a seven-year, $11.6 billion contract commitment with Anthropic, underscoring demand for cloud and AI infrastructure.

The agreement covers Akamai’s distributed AI infrastructure and software, which will support Anthropic’s growing CPU workloads. Akamai said the arrangement can expand by as much as $9 billion, putting the potential total commitment at about $20 billion.

The company’s shares opened sharply higher on Sept. 25. The move followed the announcement of a large long-term commercial commitment as Akamai expands its cloud business around AI infrastructure.

The contract is structured around Anthropic’s workload needs and includes room for the companies to broaden their cooperation. Akamai’s cloud operations are expected to play a larger role in its business as the agreement develops.
