OpenAI Plans to Reopen $200 ChatGPT Pro Sign-Ups Tomorrow
The revised plan will change how weekly usage is valued, while GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna receive lower API pricing and new usage-free features are planned.
OpenAI plans to reopen new sign-ups for its $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro plan tomorrow, while changing how subscribers’ weekly usage is valued and adding features that will not count against usage.
The revised plan is expected to provide roughly half the usage value of the previous version when measured against API pricing. It will not restore the former five-hour usage limit, allowing Pro users to distribute their weekly allowance freely instead.
The change comes as OpenAI lowers API prices for GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna by 50% compared with the promotional prices for the GPT-5.6 models. GPT-6 Sol is priced at $2 per 1 million input tokens and $10 per 1 million output tokens.
GPT-6 Luna costs 10 cents per 1 million input tokens and 50 cents per 1 million output tokens. OpenAI attributed the reductions to improvements in caching and inference efficiency.
The revised usage system is intended to measure the work subscribers can complete rather than preserve a fixed dollar value of API credits. Lower model costs mean a smaller API-based allowance does not necessarily translate into a matching reduction in the amount of work users can complete.
OpenAI also plans to add more subscription features that will not consume usage, although the specific features have not been disclosed. The company is expected to announce further changes as it reopens access to new subscribers.
The move follows OpenAI’s pause on new sign-ups for its $200 ChatGPT Pro plan on Sept. 10. Existing $200 subscribers remained active, while the $100 Pro plan continued to be available.
GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna were added to ChatGPT Work and Codex on Sept. 22.
