Shell has begun shutting in production at five Gulf of Mexico assets as Tropical Storm Isaias strengthens near the U.S. coast, disrupting offshore energy operations and tightening regional supply.

The company is evacuating personnel and halting output at Mars, Olympus, Ursa, Vito and Appomattox. Nonessential personnel had already left the Stones field.

As of noon ET (16:00 UTC) Wednesday, an estimated 511,619 barrels of oil per day had been shut in across the Gulf, equal to 25.08% of current production. Natural-gas shut-ins totaled 350.25 million cubic feet per day, or 16.37% of current output.

Personnel had been evacuated from eight production platforms, representing 2.16% of 371 manned platforms. The figures are estimates based on operator daily reports.

Shut-ins are a standard safety and environmental measure during storms. Undamaged facilities are expected to return to production after inspections and routine checks.
