SpaceX’s agreement to buy a nationwide wireless spectrum portfolio sent shares of AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile lower in extended trading Thursday, signaling heightened competitive pressure as Starlink moves further into the U.S. telecommunications market.

The transaction covers up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band. SpaceX agreed to acquire the license portfolio from Grain Management, which specializes in digital infrastructure.

The deal still requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission. The low-band spectrum is intended to address a remaining technical limitation for Starlink Mobile as SpaceX works to establish the service as a major U.S. mobile carrier.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk described the agreement as a “very big deal” in a post on X.

The FCC’s review is the next concrete step for the proposed acquisition.
