U.S. Lenders Completed Foreclosures on 5,794 Properties in August
Completed foreclosures rose 42% from a year earlier, while Texas led states in repossessions and Florida recorded the most new foreclosure starts.

U.S. lenders completed foreclosures on 5,794 properties in August, a 42% increase from a year earlier, showing that completed repossessions continued to rise even as overall activity remained below pre-pandemic levels.
Texas recorded the most completed foreclosures at 1,835, followed by California with 589, North Carolina with 356, Arizona with 296 and Alabama with 286.
Houston had the highest number among major metropolitan areas, with 448 completed foreclosures. Dallas followed with 402, while San Antonio recorded 256.
Lenders started foreclosure proceedings on 25,894 properties during the month, up 7% from August 2025. Florida led the country with 3,189 foreclosure starts.
Across the U.S., 40,277 properties received a foreclosure filing in August. The total includes default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions and was 13% higher than a year earlier.
South Carolina had the highest foreclosure rate, with one filing for every 1,547 housing units. Nevada ranked second and Florida third.
The August figures indicate that some homeowners continue to face financial pressure, while foreclosure volumes remain below historical norms and pre-pandemic levels.
