U.S. Semiconductor Imports Climb $2.4 Billion to $15.4 Billion
Total imports reached $420.8 billion in August as the goods-and-services deficit widened to $105.6 billion.

U.S. semiconductor imports rose $2.4 billion in August to $15.4 billion, helping drive the nation’s goods-and-services trade deficit to $105.6 billion for the month.
Total imports increased $17.2 billion from July to $420.8 billion. Exports rose $4.5 billion to $315.2 billion, while the deficit widened 13.7% from July’s revised $92.8 billion.
The semiconductor figure was included in capital-goods imports, a category that also covers business machinery and equipment. Capital-goods imports increased $6.2 billion to $146.4 billion, the highest level recorded.
Industrial-supplies imports rose $9.1 billion. Crude-oil imports increased $3.3 billion, while nonmonetary-gold imports climbed $3.1 billion.
The goods deficit increased $12.8 billion to $136.6 billion. The services surplus rose by less than $0.1 billion to $31.0 billion.
The figures cover August 2026 and are seasonally adjusted unless otherwise specified. The release was issued at 8:30 a.m. ET (12:30 p.m. UTC) on Oct. 6.
