UnitedHealth Group’s third-quarter results will show whether the insurer can improve profitability while revenue remains under pressure, with the report due before the market opens Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Revenue is expected to decline 1.5% year over year. The outlook also calls for strong earnings-per-share growth and margin improvement as UnitedHealth exits unprofitable business lines.

The results will provide a measure of whether the company can restore top-line growth while pursuing higher margins. Revenue is expected to remain broadly flat despite the projected decline, keeping the balance between growth and profitability central to the earnings update.

Membership declines and the possibility of credit-rating downgrades remain potential challenges to a sustainable recovery. Management’s multiyear guidance will also be examined for evidence that margin gains can continue.

The company is scheduled to release its third-quarter results before the market opens Tuesday, Oct. 13.
