Funding arrangements that connect AI suppliers, investors and customers are drawing parallels to financial mechanisms seen before the 2007-08 financial crisis as investment in infrastructure and computing capacity accelerates.

The structures involve suppliers investing in or financing customers that commit to purchasing their products. Companies including Nvidia, OpenAI and Anthropic are part of an increasingly connected network that may increase financial interdependence and market imbalances.

The financing models may contribute to overvaluation and market imbalances by linking company funding to future demand for AI products and computing capacity. The arrangements do not establish that the sector faces a crisis comparable to 2008, but they show how strategic investments, supplier financing and purchase commitments can connect companies across the industry.

Google and Amazon are among the companies whose investment decisions may affect Anthropic’s valuation. A prediction-market contract placed a 2.6% probability on Anthropic reaching a $600 billion valuation by Dec. 31, indicating limited market confidence in that outcome.

The risks come as AI investment in infrastructure and computing capacity accelerates. Financial exposure could increase if expected returns fail to materialize, while new funding rounds and changes to partnership agreements may provide further indications of how stable the sector’s circular funding models remain.
