Oman became India’s largest liquefied natural gas supplier in September, shipping 0.59 million tonnes as U.S. deliveries fell 60.7% month over month to 0.34 million tonnes.

Oman’s shipments rose 11.6% from August. Nigeria supplied 0.35 million tonnes to India, and the United Arab Emirates supplied 0.31 million tonnes.

EU underground gas storage was 72% full on Oct. 1, 2026, a historically low level. European gas infrastructure could handle higher LNG imports to help meet winter demand. The available figures do not establish that European demand redirected U.S. cargoes away from India.

India protected city gas distribution during a supply squeeze by cutting allocations to fertilizer, refinery and industrial users in March and April. LNG tender awards ranged from $16.80 to $18.80 per million British thermal units between March and June 2026, then reached as much as $26.40 per million British thermal units in September.

The supplier change comes as Asian buyers widen supply and shipping options amid disruption to Gulf supplies and risks around the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier coverage examined those efforts to secure replacement cargoes outside the Gulf.
