Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that a container ship exploded and caught fire after hitting a naval mine south of the Strait of Hormuz, while senior official Mohsen Rezaei said attacks on vessels would continue.

Iranian state media published images of the sinking Wednesday. The IRGC characterized the vessel as carrying contraband and said it was traveling through an “unauthorized and dangerous route.”

Rezaei told Iranian state TV, “We target five or six of these every night.” He added that the Strait of Hormuz was “under the control of the Islamic Republic.”

The IRGC’s published footage showed the ship sinking. The force described it as carrying 2,500 containers.
