Anthropic edged OpenAI in a purchasing measure of businesses that bought from a foundational large language model vendor, while separate spending and traffic metrics showed different patterns.

A purchasing snapshot updated Oct. 15 put Anthropic’s adoption rate at 80%, compared with 78% for OpenAI, among businesses that had bought from a foundational large language model vendor. Anthropic’s rate rose 40 percentage points year over year, while OpenAI’s fell 17 points. The measure tracks purchasing businesses, not revenue.

An enterprise spending estimate for 2025 placed Anthropic at 40% of spending on large language models, up from 24% in 2024 and 12% in 2023. OpenAI’s estimated share was 27%, down from 50% in 2023. The estimate approximates dollars spent through production API use and reflects conditions in December 2025. It drew on a survey of 495 U.S. enterprise AI decision-makers conducted Nov. 7-25, 2025.

A model-routing platform handled 128.4 trillion tokens in the week beginning Sept. 14, with OpenAI models accounting for 78% of combined OpenAI and Anthropic token use. OpenAI also represented just over half of the pair’s combined spending in the week beginning Sept. 7. In the week beginning Oct. 5, OpenAI accounted for 18.6% of text requests across model authors, compared with 3.9% for Anthropic; Anthropic’s request count rose 59% from the prior week. The figures add to an earlier look at August token use on the platform.

The measures capture different activity and periods. One counts businesses that purchased LLM services, another estimates enterprise spending through production APIs, and the marketplace figures track activity routed through a single platform. They do not form one market-share series.

Menlo Ventures first invested in Anthropic in 2023 and has a financial interest in the company.
