Strategy’s Bitcoin Holdings Exceeded an Alternative Financing Model by 4,947 BTC

The counterfactual redirects funds tied to reserve building, STRC repurchases and dividends toward Bitcoin. Estimated annualized costs tied to STRC expansion could equal the gap in about seven months.

Strategy’s Bitcoin (BTC) holdings were 4,947 BTC above a counterfactual financing model’s estimate for Oct. 12. The scenario redirects funds tied to reserve building, STRC repurchases and dividends toward Bitcoin purchases.

Strategy held 848,250 BTC on that date, while the alternative scenario put holdings at 843,303 BTC. The difference is a modeled outcome, not a separate batch of coins identified as bought directly with STRC proceeds. It reflects how the balance might have differed if money associated with the reserve, buybacks and dividends had instead gone toward Bitcoin.

Estimated annual preferred-dividend obligations for Strategy reached $1.56 billion, compared with about $830 million earlier in 2026. An estimated $725 million of the increase was tied to STRC’s expansion. The $725 million figure describes an estimated annualized cost, not an amount already paid.

At a Bitcoin price of about $83,000, that annualized cost is equivalent to roughly 8,740 BTC per year. The model estimates the recurring cost could equal the 4,947-BTC gap in about seven months. The comparison adds a recurring dividend obligation to the modeled accumulation benefit. Earlier coverage of Strategy’s preferred-share dividend burden examined the annualized expense estimate.

Strategy’s USD Reserve stood at $4.88 billion as of Oct. 11, alongside $640.5 million in broader USD Cash. In June, Strategy established the reserve to support those payments and set STRC’s annual dividend rate at 12%, effective for semi-monthly periods with record dates on or after July 1. STRC is Strategy’s variable-rate perpetual preferred stock.

Strategy purchased 250 BTC at an average price of $86,194 and announced a $192 million STRC repurchase in its Oct. 12 activity. The Bitcoin purchase used $21 million from MSTR stock-sale proceeds and $500,000 from USD Cash. The counterfactual comparison depends on its assumptions about how funds would have been deployed and the Bitcoin price used.
