The first features will require driver supervision, with hands-free travel on city streets and highways a longer-term aim.

Volvo Cars announced an expanded partnership with NVIDIA on Oct. 15 to develop automated-driving technology for a next-generation vehicle, with the system expected to reach Volvo cars before 2030. The plan sets out a gradual move toward more automated driving, while the first features will keep drivers responsible for supervision.

The system is intended to handle trips from departure to parking, including highway stretches and busy urban streets. Volvo’s safety systems and engineering will work with NVIDIA’s Hyperion sensor and computing architecture, Halos OS and Alpamayo Stack driving software.

The technology is intended to move gradually toward “eyes-off and mind-off” driving. Initial features will require drivers to supervise the vehicle. Hands-free driving on city streets and highways is a later goal.

“There’s no hurry, safety first,” NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said of the gradual rollout.

Volvo has not named the first model to use the system or set a customer launch date. The companies’ collaboration dates to 2017. The expanded plan builds on an earlier Volvo-NVIDIA automated-driving effort.
