Tesla showed a redesigned Roadster electric sports car prototype in Texas on Thursday and set 2028 as its production target, reviving a project first announced nearly nine years ago.

The event began at 8:55 p.m. ET Oct. 15 (00:55 UTC Oct. 16). During the demonstration, the white prototype ascended a curved ramp, inverted, flipped and briefly hovered with fans and thrusters. A timer displayed about one second for a run from zero to 60 mph.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said, “This will be the actual car that’s on the roads.” The 2028 target is for production; no customer-delivery date was announced.

The next-generation Roadster debuted after Tesla’s Semi presentation on Nov. 16, 2017. Tesla’s initial performance goals included a 1.9-second zero-to-60-mph time, a top speed above 250 mph and 620 miles of range. Those were the original targets, not a confirmed specification set for the prototype shown in Texas.

Tesla had initially aimed for the car to be available in 2020, making the new production target eight years later. The company’s original Roadster entered regular production in 2008. Tesla had previously scheduled the Oct. 15 presentation in an update on the Roadster’s event schedule.
