U.S. Ground Beef Prices Fell 1.3% in September to $7.06 a Pound
The September average was $7.062 per pound, down from August’s $7.16 record. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) also raised its beef import outlook for 2026 and 2027.

U.S. ground beef prices eased in September after reaching an August record, while the federal government raised its beef import outlook for 2026 and 2027 amid efforts to expand supply.
The average price dropped 1.3% to $7.062 a pound, from $7.16 in August. The monthly decline was the largest since 2024, though prices remained near record levels. Steak prices also fell for a second consecutive month, down about 1% to $12.69 a pound.
The USDA raised its beef import forecasts for 2026 and 2027. President Donald Trump’s administration has allowed up to 300,000 tons of ground beef imports at lower tariff rates and reopened several land ports to Mexican cattle. A total of 24,000 cattle entered through two Arizona and New Mexico crossings through Thursday. Imports have remained depressed amid the spread of New World screwworm.
Broader food costs were also higher year over year: U.S. grocery prices rose 2.2% in August.
