Early S&P 500 earnings results have topped analyst expectations broadly, with 83% of early reporters exceeding earnings-per-share estimates as 24 major companies reported this week.

Twenty-three companies posted year-over-year profit growth. Most companies also beat revenue estimates, though some missed analysts’ forecasts. Reports came from financial, health care, industrial, consumer and real estate companies.

Beating forecasts did not ensure positive stock reactions. Slower growth in some areas, competitive pressure, charges and revenue misses also shaped how investors responded to earnings results.

The S&P 500 earnings outlook has also faced questions about concentrated gains, rising costs and heavy artificial intelligence spending.

The next wave of reports is expected to include large technology companies such as Tesla, Meta and IBM, along with industrial, defense, energy and financial companies including American Express and Blackstone.
