Employee-directed interactive agents at Anthropic logged runtime equal to six times their handlers’ estimated work hours in August, as junior workers’ share of technical hiring fell and measured output rose across the company.

Junior employees made up 14% of technical department staff, down from 21% in early 2025. They accounted for 9% of technical hires, compared with 27% previously. Technical hiring continued to grow in absolute terms; those percentages describe shares and do not establish that the number of junior hires fell.

Anthropic’s technical departments made up 56% of its workforce, down from 61% over the prior year as sales, finance and recruiting grew faster. Hiring managers placed more emphasis on candidates’ autonomy and judgment than on specific technical expertise.

Code commits per engineer reached five times their level from six months earlier. Output also rose in legal, accounts payable and sales. In one measure of code quality, agent-written and employee-written code had similar rates of lines later removed or reverted.

The August runtime comparison counted inference and active tool use, while excluding waits longer than 30 minutes. The employee-hours estimate used a 40-hour workweek.

Meta-work, including building monitoring tools and managing agent workflows, rose from 10% of the average employee’s interactive Claude sessions in fall 2025 to 22% in spring 2026. About 80% of interactive-session time was idle while agents waited for human input. The session percentages measure interactive use, not employees’ total time spent overseeing AI.

Anthropic is setting up an early-warning system to track roles facing AI-driven change and help identify internal moves as work shifts. These company-specific figures do not measure hiring or employment across U.S. employers. The findings add detail to earlier coverage of Anthropic’s agent activity and hiring mix.
