AEP and X-energy to Study 960 MW Indiana Nuclear Project

Amazon will fund development and intends to buy the plant’s electricity under a long-term contract if the project is built. The proposal calls for 12 80 MW Xe-100 reactors at a retired coal site.

American Electric Power (AEP) and X-energy will study a proposed 960 MW Indiana nuclear plant, with Amazon funding development and planning to buy power if the project is built.

Plans call for 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors, each rated at 80 MW, near the former Breed Generating Station in Sullivan County. The retired coal plant site is owned by AEP.

The proposal remains in the feasibility stage. If it advances through a final investment decision and reaches construction and operation, Amazon intends to purchase electricity under a long-term contract. The planned agreement would cover the facility’s costs and operations for the contract’s duration.

The Indiana proposal would be the second project in Amazon and X-energy’s collaboration, after a project in Washington state. The two companies aim to add more than 5 gigawatts of U.S. nuclear capacity by 2039.

The plan joins other technology-sector nuclear power agreements, including a separate 890 MW expansion agreement involving Google and Constellation Energy.

Josh Weissman, Amazon’s vice president of data center infrastructure capacity delivery, said the company plans to “pay our full costs without passing them to others.”
