Stanbic Bank Ghana, RD Technologies Explore Stablecoin Trade Payments
Stanbic would handle customer accounts and local compliance, while RD Technologies would provide payment infrastructure and access to an Asian settlement network.

Stanbic Bank Ghana and RD Technologies are exploring stablecoin-based settlement for payments from Ghanaian businesses to Asian suppliers, testing how digital assets could support trade payments through a bank-led service.
The proposed arrangement would focus first on business-to-business transactions. Customers would continue to use Stanbic’s banking services, while stablecoin technology would support the cross-border settlement process behind them.
Stanbic would manage customer onboarding and account opening, identity checks, transaction approvals, local-currency settlement and compliance oversight in Ghana. RD Technologies would provide payment technology and digital-asset infrastructure, connect transactions to its Asian settlement network and coordinate settlement overseas.
The companies are assessing how that infrastructure could complement existing banking services and make trade payments more efficient and transparent. Ghana’s virtual-asset framework includes stablecoins, which are already used for some cross-border settlements in the country’s informal and semi-formal economy.
Next, the companies plan to engage regulators and form a project team to test the technology and design a controlled pilot.
