ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have ordered more than $35 billion worth of NVIDIA RTX PRO 5500 graphics cards, but production limits could leave most of the requested chips undelivered.

The companies ordered more than 3 million cards, priced at about $11,400 apiece. NVIDIA has told partners that shortages may restrict deliveries to 5% to 10% of the orders because demand exceeds production capacity.

The RTX PRO 5500 does not use NVIDIA's latest Blackwell architecture. Under U.S. export controls, it is the most powerful compliant NVIDIA chip currently available for purchase in China. The cards are intended mainly for AI inference and post-training model generation.

The RTX PRO 5500 is less powerful than the restricted B300 and H200 chips. Supply constraints and continued restrictions have made it an alternative for Chinese technology companies facing limited access to computing capacity. NVIDIA plans to shift most of its TSMC production capacity to next-generation Rubin products beginning in 2027.
