Visa, BILL and Billtrust launched a live pilot Oct. 20 that lets an AI agent complete approved business invoice payments through supplier portals, testing a way to reduce manual payment entry.

The pilot is processing transactions involving participating BILL buyers and Billtrust suppliers. It addresses a step that can remain after invoice approval: entering payment information in a supplier’s portal.

BILL’s Payment Agent carries out the buyer’s approved instructions using tokenized card credentials. Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol lets Billtrust authenticate the agent at its portal without an additional agent login. Buyers do not need to share their supplier-portal login credentials with the agent.

The buyer decides which invoices to pay and sets the payment instructions and controls. The agent executes eligible payments after approval; it does not select invoices. Suppliers retain their payment acceptance rules and visibility into the transactions.

“Businesses should not have to choose between automation and control when making payments,” said Mark Nelsen, Visa senior vice president and head of product for Commercial and Money Movement Solutions.

Visa launched Trusted Agent Protocol in October 2025 so websites could recognize authorized AI agents. Visa and Billtrust announced a partnership focused on digital business payments in 2017.
