General Motors plans to add hybrids in several vehicle segments it serves, as U.S. regular gasoline averages more than $4 a gallon and Toyota's electrified vehicle sales rise 28.5%.

General Motors Chair and CEO Mary Barra outlined the plan on Oct. 20. “We will have hybrids,” she told analysts. Barra said hybrids were already included in GM's plans and would require no additional capital spending or engineering.

The company has not named the models or given a launch schedule. Barra said the current hybrid market is concentrated in compact and midsize cars and minivans, segments GM does not serve. She said GM would provide more information closer to launch.

GM sold 670,974 vehicles in the U.S. during the third quarter, down 5.5% from 710,347 a year earlier. Toyota Motor North America sold 633,223 vehicles, up 0.6%. Its 363,367 electrified vehicle sales accounted for 57.4% of the total and rose 28.5% from the same quarter in 2025.

Regular gasoline averaged $4.2644 per gallon on Oct. 21, down from $4.2786 the previous day and up from $3.0478 on Oct. 21, 2025.

An estimated 56,000 U.S. households chose hybrids or electric vehicles instead of gasoline vehicles from February through May 2026. That included 38,000 households choosing conventional hybrids and 18,000 choosing electric vehicles. The estimate did not establish that fuel prices alone drove those choices.

GM Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson also discussed the outlook for electric vehicle demand. “We think with these oil prices and these fuel prices, that EV penetration may continue to go up, and we want to make sure we're ready for that,” he said.

GM plans to share more details about its hybrids closer to launch, but has not announced when it will identify models or timing.
