General Motors plans to add an AI assistant to OnStar in the 2027 Cadillac LYRIQ by late 2026, bringing voice commands and model-specific help to drivers through a remote software update.

Drivers will be able to speak commands to operate vehicle functions, request information such as tire pressure and charging status, and ask about features in their model. The assistant can also connect a driver with an OnStar advisor. GM has not named other vehicles slated to receive the feature or given a rollout schedule for them.

GM announced the changes Oct. 21 as part of an expansion of its 30-year-old OnStar service. The assistant is planned to arrive first in the 2027 LYRIQ, with other vehicles to follow at unspecified times.

A unified OnStar app planned for 2027 would replace OnStar Guardian and the separate apps for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC. Connected cameras can capture an event after a trigger, such as an aggressive horn honk, then send a recording to the app with an alert. Recordings will be encrypted, subject to time limits and inaccessible to GM.

Sterling Anderson, GM’s vice president of global product and chief product officer, described the shift as a move beyond OnStar’s historic call-center role. “OnStar is now transitioning to be a connected intelligence platform, not just the call center that it’s historically been known as.”

A Jan. 14, 2026, order from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settled the agency’s allegations that GM and OnStar collected, used and sold precise geolocation and driving-behavior data from millions of vehicles without adequately informing consumers or obtaining affirmative consent. The order bars GM from sharing consumers’ geolocation and driver-behavior data with consumer reporting agencies for five years. During the order’s 20-year term, GM must obtain affirmative express consent before collecting, using or sharing connected-vehicle data, subject to exceptions.
