Bose has added Skullcandy to its Premium Consumer Audio business, aiming to reach consumers in communities where it has less presence.

The acquisition was announced Oct. 21 at 4:30 p.m. ET (20:30 UTC). Skullcandy will retain its separate identity and continue to be based in Park City, Utah, where it was founded in 2003.

Bose acquired the audio brand from a fund managed by Mill Road Capital Management LLC. The companies did not disclose financial terms.

The deal builds on several years of work between the companies. Skullcandy headphones and earbuds already use Sound by Bose technology. Bose plans to give Skullcandy access to its technology, resources, global distribution and commercial relationships.

The companies plan to develop products combining Bose’s audio technology and global reach with Skullcandy’s designs and community ties. Skullcandy has roots in boardsports and ties to music, gaming and fitness.

“We’re expanding how we do that, not only through Bose products, but through technology partnerships and a growing portfolio of brands,” Bose CEO Lila Snyder said.
