eBay began a new round of job cuts this week at major offices in China, including Shanghai. The reductions may already be as high as 80% of the company’s China workforce, compared with its smaller global target.

The global workforce plan calls for cuts of about 9% worldwide. The restructuring is intended to make eBay more efficient and give greater priority to faster-growing parts of its business. In February 2026, eBay announced plans to eliminate about 800 jobs, or 6% of its workforce.

An estimate places eBay’s China research and development center at 500 to 1,000 workers. A Shanghai software engineering entity had 611 insured people in 2025, while a separate Shanghai network information services entity had 118 people. A Shanghai management entity had 189 employees in 2024.
