Infineum, the U.K. specialty additives venture owned by Shell and ExxonMobil, is exploring a sale at an indicative valuation of about $8 billion.

The process is at an early stage, and a transaction is not assured. Bank of America is advising on the potential sale, and private-equity firms may be interested. No buyer or agreed purchase price has been identified.

Infineum makes specialty additives for fuel and lubricant industries. Established in January 1999, it is an equal joint venture between Shell and ExxonMobil, with products sold in more than 90 countries.
