Microsoft is winding down The Garage as a centralized employee program, while changes to its physical spaces will vary by location and some could be restricted as early as Friday, Oct. 23.

The company has not identified which locations may be affected. The change ends The Garage’s centralized function, but the timing and scope of site-level changes will differ.

The Garage has given employees a year-round place to experiment, learn and collaborate across teams. Its activities have included maker spaces and Microsoft’s companywide, multiday Global Hackathon.

The hackathon’s team is reimagining the program and plans to share more later. Microsoft has not announced that the annual event is canceled, and its future format has not been specified.

The Garage began in 2009 within Microsoft’s Office Labs group in Redmond, Washington. It had 15 locations in 2026. Projects with roots in the program include Seeing AI and the Xbox Adaptive Controller.
