BMW plans to bring the 2027 X5 to U.S. buyers in three powertrain versions, with the mild-hybrid X5 40 xDrive scheduled for October 2026 and the plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive and all-electric iX5 60 xDrive scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

BMW announced the fifth-generation X5 on June 30. A charging demonstration announced by BMW, IONNA and Alpitronic on Oct. 20 highlighted the iX5 60 xDrive’s charging capability. Its stated maximum charging power is up to 460 kilowatts; that is the vehicle’s specified maximum, not a measured peak from the demonstration. The demonstration did not represent charging hardware commercially available in the United States at the time.

The estimated time to charge from 10% to 80% is 23 minutes, and the iX5 60 xDrive can add up to 182 miles of range in 10 minutes. The estimates are based on BMW testing that followed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) procedures.

The June preliminary range estimate for the iX5 60 xDrive was up to 435 miles, also based on testing that followed EPA procedures. The estimate is preliminary rather than a final EPA rating.

The iX5 60 xDrive’s dual motors are rated at 570 horsepower and 593 pound-feet of torque. Its battery has 144 kilowatt-hours of net usable energy, and the vehicle uses an 800-volt system. A North American Charging Standard port is standard, and the SUV has bidirectional charging capability.

The X5 40 xDrive pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The engine is rated at 394 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid system can add up to 17 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque.

The plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive has an estimated electric-only range of up to 44 miles. It is scheduled to join the iX5 60 xDrive in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2027, after the X5 40 xDrive’s planned October launch.

Starting prices are $72,100 for the X5 40 xDrive and $79,800 for the iX5 60 xDrive, each before a $1,450 destination and handling charge. BMW plans to add the iX5 Hydrogen at a later stage.
