Torani CEO Calls Layoffs a Choice as U.S. Job-Cut Announcements Fall 39%
Employers announced 43,281 U.S. job cuts in September 2026, down 20% from a year earlier. Dulbecco said automation means Torani is hiring fewer people than it otherwise would.

In an interview published Oct. 18, 2026, Torani CEO Melanie Dulbecco called layoffs a management choice and said her company has never conducted them, as U.S. job-cut announcements remained below 2025 levels through September.
“I think layoffs are a choice,” Dulbecco said. U.S. employers announced 43,281 job cuts in September 2026, 18% fewer than in August and 20% fewer than in September 2025. From January through September, announcements totaled 573,195, down 39% from 946,426 in the same period of 2025. The figures count announced cuts, not confirmed completed job losses.
Dulbecco said Torani uses automation for repetitive manual work with limited career mobility. She said the company uses artificial intelligence for consumer and market research, sales forecasting and demand planning. Automation means Torani is hiring fewer people than it otherwise would, she said.
