President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth term in Brazil’s presidency, defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a runoff that left the country almost evenly divided. Lula received 51.8% of valid votes, compared with 48.2% for Bolsonaro, a 3.6-percentage-point gap.

Investors will watch how Lula’s next term shapes policy in Brazil, the region’s largest economy. Lula’s victory gives him another term after a close national vote, with the final tally giving him a narrow majority and Bolsonaro just under half of valid ballots.

The runoff decided the presidency between Lula and Bolsonaro, and the vote shares show how closely divided the electorate was: less than four percentage points separated the candidates. Lula’s 51.8% exceeded the 50% mark, while Bolsonaro’s 48.2% finished 1.8 points below it.

For investors monitoring Brazil’s political outlook, the result leaves the next administration’s policy direction as a key issue. The contest ended with Lula winning the presidency and Bolsonaro receiving nearly half of valid votes.
