Semiconductor Stocks Fall as OpenAI Seeks Up to $30 Billion

The potential raise comes amid broader questions about AI infrastructure financing and a sharp drop in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.

OpenAI is seeking up to $30 billion at a valuation below its initial pitch to investors, adding to scrutiny of how major artificial intelligence companies will finance infrastructure.

The wider AI infrastructure financing debate also involves Meta and Nvidia.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell sharply, erasing substantial value from U.S. technology stocks. Market participants have also questioned the financial sustainability of AI initiatives.

The funding debate echoes earlier scrutiny of the gap between AI companies’ revenue growth and infrastructure costs. Earlier figures included Anthropic’s first-half revenue of about $16.3 billion and computing and infrastructure costs approaching $9 billion.
