GSK’s clinical-stage oncology portfolio could nearly double by 2027, and the company may have 19 to 20 late-stage studies underway then, oncology chief Hesham Abdullah said.

Abdullah put GSK’s current clinical-stage oncology portfolio at about 15 assets. The 19-to-20 figure counts studies, not distinct drug candidates; one medicine can be evaluated in more than one study.

GSK reported 62 assets in clinical development in its July 28 second-quarter update and set a target of more than 20 Phase 3 trial starts during 2026, up from 10. That target covers the full pipeline, including oncology and other areas, rather than oncology alone. GSK also identified seven assets for accelerated development across 18 indications in oncology, respiratory, hepatology and vaccines.

GSK completed its acquisition of Nuvalent on July 15 in a deal with an equity value of about $10.6 billion. The purchase added three lung cancer assets; two were under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and one was in Phase 1 when the deal closed.
