Centrus Energy’s Oak Ridge plant completed its first newly manufactured centrifuge Thursday and began shipping the equipment to Ohio, advancing the company’s multibillion-dollar uranium-enrichment expansion.

The centrifuge is headed to the company’s Piketon site for final assembly. Centrus expects the first new enrichment capacity in Ohio in 2029, with centrifuges arranged in cascades. The company plans to increase its manufacturing rate over time.

Centrus completed the first new centrifuge and secured a complete manufacturing supply chain ahead of its previously announced year-end target. The shipment moves the newly manufactured equipment from Tennessee to Ohio for assembly as the company works toward the planned capacity expansion.

The Oak Ridge plant restarted centrifuge manufacturing in December 2025. On Jan. 23, Centrus announced plans to invest more than $560 million over several years to expand and modernize the facility. The planned shift to high-rate manufacturing is designed to support production of thousands of advanced centrifuges.

Centrus announced its Piketon expansion in September 2025. The planned scale depends on federal funding decisions. The expansion is intended to support production of low-enriched uranium (LEU), high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) and enrichment for national security needs.

An existing centrifuge cascade in Ohio has produced HALEU since late 2023. Centrus President and CEO Amir Vexler said, “These milestones demonstrate our ability to translate our investment into tangible progress.”
