Opentrons Raises $40 Million to Expand AI Lab Automation
Healthcare investor Avego led the Series E, with BroadOak Capital Partners also investing. Opentrons plans to expand its robotics, software and data infrastructure.

Opentrons Labworks announced a $40 million Series E on Thursday, Oct. 29, to expand its lab automation business and support AI-driven experiments. Healthcare investor Avego led the round, with BroadOak Capital Partners also investing.
The company plans to put the funding toward its robotics, software and data infrastructure. It also plans to expand automation capabilities, enter new markets and geographies, and integrate its tools more deeply into the broader laboratory automation ecosystem.
Opentrons' Flex platform combines robots and AI systems to design, conduct and refine experiments in a continuous process. The company also plans to speed protocol development and expand the capabilities of its robots and instruments.
“Every AI-driven discovery still has to be tested in a real lab,” said James Flexner, managing partner at Avego. Opentrons was founded in 2014 and is headquartered in New York City.
