Anthropic Flags AI Research Acceleration Risk in Amended IPO Filing

The policy includes doubling aggregate AI capability progress against a baseline as one trigger; Anthropic has not designated any current model as exceeding it.

Anthropic’s amended IPO filing lays out when AI-driven research would count as dramatically accelerated progress, as Claude already contributes to work on the company’s next generation of models.

Anthropic’s Responsible Scaling Policy sets two triggers for dramatically accelerated AI progress. An AI system could perform an entire AI research team’s work at competitive cost, defined as within a factor of five. Or automated AI research or engineering could plausibly double aggregate progress in AI capabilities against a baseline.

Claude assists with coding, experiments and training-data processing for future models. Anthropic warns that models developed with this support could then help speed later research and development, forming a feedback loop.

Anthropic has not designated any current model as exceeding the threshold and is still assessing the underlying data. The company is considering policy changes to keep key research processes under human supervision and control as capabilities may advance faster than safety evaluations, alignment research and safeguards.
