Insurance is expected to cover only a small share of Binance’s theft losses, leaving the exchange to cover most of the cost through other funds.

Binance has directors and officers (D&O) liability insurance. The policy can address claims against executives tied to regulatory investigations or lawsuits. That is executive liability coverage; Binance has no cyber insurance policy.

Binance’s Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU), a user protection fund, also has no external insurance or reinsurance.

Across the crypto sector, cyber insurance is considered nearly impossible to obtain. Some companies seek recovery through crypto, crime or D&O policies, but those contracts often include extensive exclusions. Those exclusions can narrow a company’s recovery even when it has a policy, leaving insurance as a limited backstop for theft losses.
