BYD’s Yangwang U9 Xtreme struck a barrier during a high-speed run on a closed track in China, shedding its rear axle while the cockpit stayed intact and the driver escaped injury.

The run may have targeted 500 kph, or about 311 mph. That possible target is roughly 3 mph above the 308 mph top speed BYD has said the car can reach; it is not a confirmed speed for the run.

The $3 million electric supercar has four motors with a combined peak output of 2,220 kilowatts, or 2,977 horsepower. BYD plans to produce 30 Yangwang U9 Xtreme cars worldwide.
