Google expanded a severance-backed voluntary departure program to selected employees in five countries in June 2026 as it seeks to control rising costs amid heavy investment in artificial intelligence.

The offers reached workers in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. Some teams had introduced the program in 2025. Google Cloud and DeepMind employees were excluded from earlier offers, and the latest expansion appears to follow the same pattern.

In Switzerland, the offer provided one month of salary for each year of service, capped at 12 months.

Microsoft separately offered voluntary departures to 60,000 employees last week.
