Waymo Plans to End Uber Exclusivity in Austin and Atlanta in 2028
Waymo plans to take ride requests through its own app in both cities. Uber plans to keep hosting Waymo robotaxis while the companies have an agreement.

Waymo plans to end its exclusive arrangement with Uber in Austin and Atlanta in January 2028, giving riders a way to book robotaxi trips through Waymo’s own app in those markets.
Waymo already offers app bookings in other cities. Uber plans to continue hosting Waymo robotaxis on its app for as long as the companies have an agreement. Uber also works with many robotaxi and other autonomous vehicle partners.
Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said the company initially partnered with Uber because of its scale. She described the uncertainty over whether a rider would get a robotaxi or a human-driven car as “a little bit of a crapshoot.”
Mawakana said a direct relationship with riders matters to Waymo and that the company had heard feedback from riders in Austin and Atlanta. The planned change is set to begin in January 2028.
