Apple is considering daily AI spending caps of $100 for some engineering groups and $25 for some nonengineering teams, extending cost controls beyond engineers whose limit was lowered in October. The proposed caps remain under consideration; the information available does not say they have taken effect.

The contemplated $100 engineering cap would be half the $200 daily limit now applying to some engineers. That $200 limit followed a reduction from $300 in October, detailed in earlier coverage of the engineers’ AI spending cap.

Many nonengineering teams previously had a $100 daily cap. A proposed $25 limit for some of those teams would be one-quarter of that amount. The potential changes apply to selected groups, not all Apple employees.

Employees who need a higher daily amount can request an exception from senior executives. Apple employees can use Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Some teams have been encouraged to use less expensive models or models that run on devices.

AI-assisted coding can consume large amounts of tokens, the units models process. Few employees used the full $300 daily limit, while some worried that tighter controls could signal broader cost-cutting and possible layoffs. The potential savings have not been quantified.
