Decentralized finance is entering a new era — one where predictable, steady returns are no longer exclusive to Wall Street. According to Aave Labs founder Stani Kulechov and Ethena CEO Guy Young, crypto is now developing financial tools that closely mirror traditional fixed-income products like bonds and savings accounts.

Speaking at the Digital Asset Summit (DAS) in New York, Young explained that fixed income in traditional markets has always been about distributing risk in structured ways. He noted that this dimension of DeFi was largely underdeveloped just two years ago. Today, platforms like Pendle are changing that by allowing users to choose between fixed and variable interest rates — a concept long familiar in conventional finance but historically difficult to execute in crypto.

"It's very difficult to know three months out what the market is actually going to look like," Young acknowledged, highlighting the core challenge of building reliable yield instruments in a volatile asset class.

Kulechov pointed to Aave's role in enabling this evolution. By functioning as a deep liquidity source, Aave is helping newer DeFi protocols get off the ground and scale more quickly. However, he was transparent about where most crypto yields still originate — leverage and trading activity rather than genuine lending or credit markets.

That distinction matters for long-term sustainability. Both founders see real-world asset tokenization as the bridge that will eventually bring traditional financial yields fully onchain. As more tangible assets are represented on blockchain networks, the economics underpinning DeFi returns could shift meaningfully toward models that mainstream investors already understand and trust.

For crypto to attract institutional capital at scale, building credible fixed-income alternatives isn't optional — it's essential. The infrastructure is taking shape, and the momentum is clearly building.
