Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan Sees Bitcoin (BTC) Benefiting Across Three Paths
His framework allows for sharp losses before gains and identifies several unlikely but possible threats to Bitcoin’s long-term case.

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argues that Bitcoin’s long-term case does not depend on one economic outcome. He sees three different paths that could support the asset, while allowing for steep declines along the way.
One path is money and credit growing faster than the real economy. In Hougan’s framework, recession-driven liquidity or persistent inflation could weaken purchasing power and favor Bitcoin’s fixed supply, capped at 21 million coins.
A second path depends on genuine productivity growth, including gains from artificial intelligence. Hougan’s case is that greater productivity and wealth could give scarce assets such as Bitcoin a higher valuation. The third path is a soft landing without recession or inflation, in which he points to Bitcoin’s rising share of asset allocations as a source of support.
Those scenarios do not imply a smooth climb. Hougan’s framework allows for a difficult downturn before eventual gains. During the COVID-19 panic in early 2020, Bitcoin lost about 50% of its value in several days, then recovered nearly 20-fold from its low.
Hougan also identifies risks to Bitcoin’s long-term case: quantum computing threats to older wallets, coordinated restrictions by governments, and a return to austerity and tighter currency management. He characterizes those outcomes as unlikely, but possible.
