Morgan Stanley’s August commentary framed the U.S. market as moving from early-cycle into its middle phase, when investors may place greater weight on companies’ ability to sustain earnings, preserve margins and generate cash. Chief Investment Officer and Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson presented that as the firm’s market assessment.

On Aug. 11, Wilson described a tilt toward higher-quality companies. He said investors were rewarding firms with improving earnings and free-cash-generation expectations.

A separate Morgan Stanley wealth management outlook dated Oct. 14 favored selected large U.S. companies with earnings forecasts it viewed as achievable. The outlook drew on a presentation made Oct. 7.
